When was the last time you finger painted?

Bet you are thinking of your childhood and remembering the experience with a smile on your face. The colors, the tactile feel of the paint, the unbridled expression, the joy!

On Saturday, March 9 at La Quinta Arts Festival, head to the Amphitheater for your opportunity to re-live that happy memory and see a masterpiece come to life!

Ready for your unique touch, Santa Monica artist Peter Tigler will guide festivalgoers in a fun participatory art mural on a specially designed 7ft.x15ft. canvas.

Combining the ancient art of color-by-number and the high tech method of finger-painting, Tigler draws the shapes, fills in the numbers, mixes the colors, and creates the stage for the painting to take place. Then, each painter gets a paint-filled small cup that has a number on it that matches the number on the canvas. They’ll go up to the canvas and match the number, and just dab the paint on the surface. It’s that simple – and that gratifying!

“I think it gets you in touch with your primal creativity. There’s nothing between you and the paint. You become the color. It’s very satisfying!” said a recent Tigler mural participant.

Tigler brings a unique vision to his dramatic, recognizable pieces, which include traditional media and cutting-edge computer images.  He has created public participation murals for The Getty Museum, Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, Providence College and cities including Santa Monica and Marina del Rey.

Check out these timelapse videos from Tigler’s prior participatory art murals.

Tigler shares, “The surface is quite chaotic, messy and unintelligible. But as the viewer steps back, the image comes into focus, and that’s where all the magic happens.

Don’t miss a chance to make your mark on a mural which celebrates our fabulous desert lifestyle at the 37th La Quinta Arts Festival!

This new interactive art activity is made possible by an ArtsTank Greater Palm Springs grant from California Desert Arts Council (CDAC).
