Muddy Waters said he was still delivering the Blues because he “had a long memory”. La Quinta Arts Foundation hopes to create some memories at the Third Annual La Quinta Blues and Brews, Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 11am to 6pm at La Quinta Civic Center Campus. Not the 12-bar progressions of pain and heartache which characterize the music genre born out of work songs and field hollers of slaves, but good memories of community gathered to appreciate this authentic American music form.
The event features three live blues bands, over 30 microbrew and craft beers, and a variety of great food. Tickets are $20 at the gate or $15 by advance purchase at www.LQAF.com and include four, 4oz. beer samples, or one 16 oz. beer, or one glass of wine, or two bottles of water.
Leading off the day’s entertainment at 11am are local favorites Barry Baughn Blues Band, Barry Baughn guitars/vocals, Alan Diaz drums/vocals, Bob Gross bass/vocals John “Mad Dog” Ruiz Hammond B3/piano. These blues impresarios fill the house each weekend at Shanghai Reds in Palm Springs, and are sure to be a draw at LQB&B.
Next up at 1:30pm is Pamela G & Blues Addiction. The dynamic vocalist Pamela G. has won numerous titles of best blues singer, and best female performer for the Inland Empire and Orange County
2006, 2007, and 2008, in addition to many accolades and awards from songwriting competitions. She has shared the stage with blues greats Robert Cray, Rod Piazza, BB King, Buddy Guy and Jimmy Vaughn.
Headlining the event starting at 3:30pm is Gino Matteo & Family Phunk. With his recent premier release I’ve Been Thinkin, Gino Matteo is burnin up Blues airwaves with songs like Bone in the Soup, Chocolate Jesus, Liquor Store Man and the album title I’ve Been Thinkin. This 25 year old phenom song writer, guitarist and vocalist has been described as “an old soul – with a voice as smooth as velvet but tough as nails.”
According to Gino,”…if you could wrap up Tom Waits, Chris Cain, and Stevie Wonder into a ball that would be where I live musically.”
I’ve Been Thinkin has just been nominated for Best Blues Album in the 2009 Just Plain Folks Music Awards, and songs Hopeless Sinner and Only 24 nominated in the Best Blues Song Category. Gino’s song Liquor Store Man received an honorable mention at the Billboard World Songwriting Contest in 2008.
Over 30 craft and microbrews will be offered including Redhook Ale, Fat Tire, Firestone Double Barrel Ale, Humbolt Hemp Ale, Stone Pale Ale, Arrogant Bastard Ale, Stella Artois, Beck’s, Beck’s Oktoberfest , Leffe, Kona Pipeline Porter, Widmer Hefeweizen, Shock Top, B.L.
