Woodsilks Studio is a collaboration between lifelong partners, Barbara Woods, a fabric artist, and H. Tom Thomas, a woodworker. Barbara studied painting in classes taught by Santa Fe artists and is self taught in textile painting and design. Prior to Woodsilks she owned and operated Alta Moda, a high fashion boutique on Palace Ave in downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico. Here she designed and made one of a kind painted silk ensembles for a world-wide clientele. Tom began his woodworking career in his mother’s workshop near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and later increased his skills with classes in the fine art of joinery and segmented turned wood. Together Barbara and Tom built a business, and a family, all the while loving the natural colors, creatures and landscapes of the American Southwest.
In the mid-nineties after tiring of fashion and wishing for a more flexible way to express her natural artistic inspirations, Barbara began to design artful lighting using painted silk laminated to opaque backing materials and joined to hand built ceramic bases. With this combination she was able to envision organic chrysalis light creations and butterfly sconces to bring a contemporary Art Nouveau style to modern environments. Soon after that Tom joined her to develop a series of turned exotic wood lamps. This classic reading light reveals the stunning natural beauty of wood grain and color, complemented by Barbara’s abstract shade designs. Woodsilks signature pieces are enjoyed by collectors all over the country.
